Before you begin cutting your rubberized floor covering, you will need the following materials:

    • Kneepads
    • Utility knife
    • T-square ruler
    • Chalk

Properly cutting your rubber rolls is imperative because it will ensure a clean, smooth and evenly horizontal surface. By following the steps in the video, you will find that this process is fairly simple and DIY-capable.

Unless you are a professional with years of experience, we recommend using protective gloves and kneepads to protect yourself while working. Although our rubber floorings are generally comfortable, because you will be working on the ground for an indefinite amount of time, using kneepads will provide extra cushion and comfort. Now, it is time for the real fun! Let’s get to cutting your rubberized floor.

To make clean and even cuts against your rubberized floor covering, use a T-square ruler and chalk to indicate a precise and straight line. Using a T-square ruler and chalk to create a visual guideline will help you know where to cut. Ideally, your T-square ruler should run the full width of your rubber flooring. Then, take your utility knife and begin cutting through the rubber.

This surfacing is very sturdy and resilient, so you will need to run the utility knife over the cut a few times before piercing all the way through. The process of running a knife repeatedly over the same cut is a technique called scoring. Scoring is used quite often in conjunction with another technique, seaming. Seaming and scoring are used when rubberized floor do not meet the required length. Sometimes, you will need to cut your rubber rolls with diagonal lines instead of horizontal lines, depending on the requirements of the area in which you will be placing your rubber floorings. Cutting diagonal lines against your rubberized floor covering can be tricky, but using a T-square ruler and chalk will maximize precision. For instance, when cutting diagonal lines, you may find that your T-square ruler does not fully reach the diagonal end. Using chalk to mark the path, you can utilize that visual guide to help move the ruler along as your begin to cut your rubberized floor.

As you are cutting, make sure to apply a sufficient amount of pressure as your run your knife through the rubber surfacing. Be cautious and aware of how much pressure you are applying, so as to reduce risk to injury. This is why we recommend using protective gloves, because we know from experience that cuts from utility knives are no fun whatsoever!
